The
beautiful Sabinal River rises in crack springs that flow from nifty slabs of
limestone in the mouth of the Lost Maples State Natural Area that is seven
miles north of Vanderpool in north-western Bandera County. The river is sixty
miles long. In many places it sinks underground to rise again downstream. The
effervescent stream is fed by Can creeks, Hale, and Hollow within the park and
by Mill, Little, and Onion creeks south of the park. Canon Creek, in Uvalde
County, popularly known as the West Prong of the Sabinal. The river flows
straight to rolling terrain with faults,
fractures, and folds, surfaced by sandy and clay loam that supports grasses and
hardwoods.
